I invest plenty of time developing myself, both personally and professionally. In particular, I spend a lot of time studying marketing.
Over the last few years, I’ve discovered a simple marketing approach that works across all businesses.
Here’s something that most media companies acknowledge, but don't fully appreciate.
Unlike most businesses, you haven’t got one customer. You’ve got TWO.
And all too often, there’s way more focus on one, at the expense of the other.

I grew up in New Zealand, and during my formative years, learning how the world of media sales works, I was hugely influenced by a guy called Doug Gold.
Doug owned and ran the More FM empire in the early to mid-90s, making some serious hay while the sun shone, before selling up in 1997…
Why do media companies exist?
Well, in their purest form, they exist to help their customers:
Generate awareness of their product or service
Build trust and relationship with the right target market
Make sales to that market
Following on from my Customer Experience thoughts a couple of weeks back, I thought I’d ask a question today:
What’s the difference between a Customer Experience and Customer Service?
Well, we believe that the ‘experience’ is proactive and takes place leading up to the point of the sale, while ‘service’ is reactive and will inevitably happen after the sale has been made.
Many advertisers spend a lot of money encouraging potential customers into their business.
But what happens when those prospective customers walk in?
The reality is that lots of businesses are simply wasting that advertising money by failing to maximise each opportunity that that advertising affords them.
It’s that time of year again. Summer holiday time.
We’ve been awash with sunshine for the last few weeks, but now the kids are (nearly) off, the flip-flops get purchased and the time by the pool or beach really starts in earnest.
And, I don’t doubt that you’ve earned it!
However, if you’re anything like me, after a couple of days with your feet up, you’ll start to yearn for some entertainment or stimulation.

That’s right, after six years in South Africa, Ian has made the decision to return to the UK and join our team, and I’m pleased as punch to be working with him again.
What is Cow Patty Bingo?
It's a pretty straight-forward idea.
Entrants receive a square of cardboard with their name on it. They are then let into an enclosed area of a field, with the instruction to, ‘Place your square anywhere in the field’!
With all the squares sold (for example 30 squares), a cow is let loose in the field. Spectators wait ‘with bated breath’ until the cow splats, and the first piece of cardboard that gets hit by the cow pat is the winner - SIMPLE!
